Richmond County has a rich manufacturing history dating back to the 1800's. The County's ability to provide water power allowed rapid growth to the textile industry, which continues to have a strong presence in the community.
With over forty industries located in Richmond County, the County has a strong manufacturing base featuring diverse products. Burlington Industries, Perdue, Owens Illinois, and Southern Bag Co., are some of the top employers in the County.
Through excellent planning, Richmond County has outstanding infrastructure in place to service the needs of industry. Electricity, gas, water, and sewer are available on attractive sites in planned 5,000-foot industrial parks. The county has begun a shell building program so that a 35,000 to 50,000 square foot building will be available at all times. The county also makes available local financing through revolving loan funds and economic development bonds.
Transportation
As transportation is a vital component for industry, Richmond County will soon be a transportation hub. New roads to include Interstates 73 and 74 will soon be a reality in Richmond County allowing interstate travel North, East and South. The proposed new and improved rail system would bring high speed rail service through Richmond County.
This combined with existing four-lane highways and new bypass, will truly allow products to be transported with ease. These roads are complemented by an existing vast rail system and a 5,000 foot paved and lighted runway at Rockingham/Hamlet Airport.
